The Advantage of Being Underestimated

I’ve said this before; I’m a HUGE Survivor fan. It’s 100% my favorite show. I shared my love here a few months ago.

This week was the finale of season 41. This season had amazing moments (especially the conversation about race in the episode 11 tribal council) and…spoilers…

I want to talk about the winner, Erica. Erica was not a winner contender until quite late in the game. She really was just there in the first half of the game and not considered a threat until final four but even then not seen as a possibility to get votes.

She has a huge quality I admire, in part because I have it too.

The ability to be, at first, not taken seriously.

Do not get me wrong. I’m a huge believer in confidence and looking like a badass. But Erica talked about being mistaken in a boardroom as an intern instead of the one in charge. I worked in a male-dominated field. I often was incorrectly seen as just the nice, friendly woman who then actually knew her shit.

It’s important to be able to use a seemingly negative thing to your advantage. Sure, I could be offended I’m just wrongly assumed to not know things. But I choose to use being underestimated, like Erica did!

  1. Hey Logan 🙂

I thought something seemed familiar … and then I remembered … back in June I stopped by & wondered about how you didn’t have an about page. Well, I see that you *DO* now! EXCELLENT!! 😀 It’s a little weird, though — as it’s written in the 3rd person … while here on the blog I get to talk to you directly!

    Well, so hello again.

So, now I’m wondering: *how* do you use your badass nature to your advantage when someone underestimates you?

    🙂 Norbert

PS / BTW : it seems like I hadn’t been *following* the blog #NowIAm

    1. Oh, I almost forgot! 😯

One of my all-time favorite songs is a tune called “Survive” (by Steve Vai — and there are plenty of copies of it on YT)
